2022 Summer Camp

Welcome to Little Parrot Farm (LPF) summer camp!

In the the past few years, we have planned our camps with the purpose of helping children to learn to respect, love and protect nature in a variety of ways. This year, we still have our fun nature classes in crafts, arts, junior farmer, food warrior (previously called green chef), and animal care taking. It has been our tradition to be very “Hands-on”. This year, we have extended the hours of our camps to include other classes such as language learning through music, recitation, calligraphy and English Journaling. We also included more physical activities such as K-pop dancing. Another special emphasis this year is that we are piloting SEE learning lessons (social, emotional and ethical learning) from Emory College in our curriculum. These classes, activities and games will involve training in focusing attention, broadening awareness of self and others, nurturing compassion and developing ethical discernment in a fun and safe way in groups. We have added more reflective and physical components in our camps with the hopes of enhancing a student’s well-being both physically and mentally, and developing their intellect as well as compassion for others and the environment.

The workshops will introduce:

* How to use basic art materials (crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils and paper collage) for visual effects

* Developing visual thinking skills: observation and interpretation

* Developing own style with creative thinking and expression

Art Teacher_Rachel Rong_Summer Camp_Little Parrot Farm

Rachel studied in the MFA program at the California Institute of the Arts and received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Contemporary artist Rachel Rong created a unique concept of art education, combining the spirit of active research, art experiment and self-expression with the cognitive development process of children, establishing an intimate relationship between people and art, improving people’s aesthetic ability and image communication skills. She believes that art, like eating, should be an indispensable part of everyone’s life. Rachel hopes that the artistic feast will be global, diverse, aesthetically advanced, and uniquely creative.

Step into our lively barns to interact with animals and tend to their needs! Brush animal hair, collect food, clean animal habitats and feed them first-hand.

With guidance from trained staff, students will:

  • Develop sensitivity in how to respond and properly handle farm animals.
  • Learn hands-on how to “treat others the way they want to be treated,” from how to pet animals, to reading cues on what is needed — water or food, rest and more.
  • Care for different kinds of animals on the farm through weekly rotation: pigs, hens, goat, duck, rabbits, cats, turtles, alpacas.

Each class, trainers will share first-hand experiences and lively stories of our farm animals. Students discover what makes each breed unique, while getting to know all the animal’s personalities — such as “Sassy Sammy” the duck, or “Gentle Andy,” the alpaca. By working in small groups, students develop teamwork skills and exercise responsibility with an assigned task from their animal caretaker mentor. From caring for animals at a young age, students plant the seeds of helping and being kind to all living creatures.

Rosa received a B.S.in Mathematics Applied Sciences & Economics, UCLA, 1992, a M.S.in Nutritional Sciences, Cal State Los Angeles, 2001, and has been a Registered Dietitian since 2001. She feels passionate about nature education for the next generation and restoring the relationship between man and nature.

Chinese Calligraphy- Did you know that Chinese words are really pictograms? Children will learn the stories behind Chinese words and how they have evolved. In fact, Chinese calligraphy is much like drawing! Learn the different types of calligraphy and their history. Children will imitate the works of the past great calligraphers and create wonderful art for themselves. Children will also learn some Chinese characters that are related to nature and animals!

2022 Summer Camp Teacher: Franz and Krissy

Franz and Krissy are a caring and positive couple who worked with young children for 20 years and ran a succesful afterschool tutoring program in Taiwan. Franz graduated from Eastern Michigan University and Krissy got her college degree in Taiwan. They look foward to joining the Little Parrot Farm’s summer teachers to have fun with the children!

Who says learning Chinese has to be boring?  Learn Chinese creatively through games and skits!  Games will enhance recalling and memorization of the words collectively.  Children will learn to form meaningful sentences for the different roles of the assigned skit.  Learn and play at the same time!

2022 Summer Camp Teacher: Grace

Grace graduated with a degree in Marketing from California State University, Los Angeles. She is a business owner who makes semi-precious stone jewelries. Grace has had experiences teaching children in afterschool programs previously. She has a unique and creative way of teaching young children. You can’t help but to pay attention to her. Her vibrant personality and a heart with compassion leads her to work with high school students in a nonprofit that provides food for the homeless. She is exicited to join Little Parrot Farm this year to teach Chinese in a non-traditional style.

Compassionate Class – Every Monday is a check-in for the week where we come together to explore the topic of kindness through conversation and activities. This is a place where children collectively put together class agreements on how they think a kind and compassionate class should be and take ownership of their class. This class sets the tone for the week and actively engages the children to practice and recognize kindness through the “Kindness Wall”.

English Journaling – We go through our daily lives without catching up with ourselves. In these journaling sessions, children can take the time to investigate how they interact and feel. Children are given a topic and some questions. For example, a topic could be “smiling”. Some sample questions could be: do you always smile at people when you meet them? How do you feel when a stranger smiles at you? Do you ever smile at yourself in the mirror? Starting by answering questions would help to initiate the thiniking process and help children to develop a skill in communicating with oneself, a dialogue in their own reflection. Journaling will nurture more awarness and sensitivty towards self and otheres, and enhance well-being of the mind.

Build up knowledge to make healthier choices

Do you really know what is on your plate? With many labels and packaged food, it can be confusing to know whether what we eat is really healthy. Through class activities and food exploration, students will learn the fundamentals of nutrition literacy for a healthier body. Healthier food, products and recipes will be introduced to empower students to make choices for a green impact. Every class devotes “Green Kitchen” time for students to see cooking demos — to work with ingredients to make and taste the healthy, nutritious ideas learned.  We will be making whole-grain pesto fusilli, chocolate chip cookies, blueberry tofu cakes, berry jams, chia seed yogurt and others.

Cherry has background in Ballet, K-Pop, Hip-Hop, and Chinese traditional dances.  In the last few years, she has been teaching K-Pop often which is popular among children!  If the children stay in the camp for a few weeks, they will be able to learn a routine that will be recorded and shared with the parents.  Children will enjoy the physical workout, the fun and Cherry’s cheerful and professional guidance.

Social Skills & Team Building Games – We never think much of it, but playing games together means to interact socially. Learning how to play together well can help children to become more self and others aware, self-regulate, resolve conflicts, nurture positive relationships, make positive decisions and cultivate empathy and compassion. Games present precious teaching moments. In addition to having fun, the debriefing discussions at the end culminates the learning experience.
